10 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT INSECTS

1)  Fruit flies were the first live organisms purposely launched into space. While numerous flights into space may have accidently brought germs and other kinds of life on board, fruit flies were the first living creatures intentionally sent into space. On February 20, 1947, they were transported atop a V2 rocket.

2)  Dragonflies were one of the first insects to appear on the globe, arriving roughly 300 million years ago.

3)  The wings of a honeybee beat 11,400 times per minute, producing a characteristic buzz.

4)  According to Guinness Global Records, the species Phryganistria chinensis, which was found in China in 2016, holds the world record for the longest bug, with one specimen measuring 25.2 inches.

5)  The colour patterns on the wings of red postman butterflies communicate to predators that they are deadly, and they also use their colour to signal to mates.

6)  Stoneflies will undertake "push-ups" to increase the volume of water passing through their gills as the oxygen level in the water drops. Some stonefly nymphs eat algae and decaying plants, whereas others prey on animals, particularly mayfly nymphs and blackfly larva.

7)  Mosquito bites resemble red lumps in the centre with a puncture wound. If a person is extremely sensitive, they may get welts or larger elevated areas. Because of how the immune system reacts to mosquito saliva, the bites itch. Mosquitoes are most likely to bite between sunset and daybreak, when it is dark.

8)  Bees put in a lot of effort to produce honey. Each trip, a bee visits 50 to 100 flowers to bring nectar and pollen back to the hive. A worker bee produces 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifespan, which is around six to eight weeks.

9)  The horned dung beetle (Onthophagus Taurus) is the gold medalist in the insect world's Olympic power-lifting competition. The beetle, which is only 10 millimetres long, can pull 1141 times its own body weight, which is the equivalent of an average man lifting two fully loaded 18-wheeler trucks.

10) The bodies of most caterpillars are cylindrical, with three pairs of real legs on the thorax and several pairs of small, fleshy prolegs on the abdomen. On each side of the head are six minuscule eyes (stemmata) that detect light but do not generate images.
